I recently witnessed an incident that could be considered child abuse outside a local store.
A young woman parked her car not far from mine. The woman took a darling, little blond girl, about 3 years old, out of the car. The woman kissed the child profusely and carried her into the grocery store. After doing my shopping, I was standing outside my car, and I witnessed the apparent mother and child coming out of the store, but this time the mother was dragging the little girl by one arm (In her other arm, she hauled the groceries she had purchased.). The mother dragged the child on her knees all the way to the car.
Another young woman stopped the mother with the child, and she was talking to her. I overheard the mother say that the child was headstrong and that she had apparently been approached by someone else in the past about a similar incident, to which the mother replied, “Then, you take her.”
I hope the child is OK. I don’t know if the other young woman reported the incident. I’ve been feeling guilty about this ever since because I wish I had called police. If I had taken the mother’s license plate number, I could have reported the incident, even after the fact. I can’t do anything about this particular incident anymore, but maybe I can encourage someone else to intercede for a child next time.
