The well-written, timely article "Booming Houston built over prairies" (Sunday's Tribune) was something everyone in the Coulee Region should be reading and paying attention to.
Houston, Texas, made a big mistake covering over their natural flood-control property, which has magnified the effect of the recent flooding.
In La Crosse, we have a marsh to do this and our politicians are allowing it to be filled in little by little. For every shovel full of dirt added to the marsh, that much water will be displaced.
Where do people think that water will go? Yes, right out into the community, flooding homes and businesses and causing the same problems Houston residents are dealing with now.
When will people wake up and tell the politicians, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agenda, Wisconsin DNR, DOT and any other agencies trying to upset the natural order of our regional natural resource to back off? No more filling in the marsh and no north-south corridor.
