This is my first opinion letter since the election of Donald Trump. I have watched as the president tells lie after lie. I was appalled at his cavalier attitude about using his celebrity to boast about sexually assaulting women. His bullying attitude and exaggerated speech have lost respect for the United States in the world.

He pardoned Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona, who had a suit filed in April 2015 by the America Civil Liberties Union charging him with among many things “denying them (inmates) care for serious medical and mental health needs.” Treatment not tolerated in our own community.

Now Republican U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore, twice removed from the Alabama Supreme Court for ethical violations, is accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl. Some Republicans still support these men.

Democrats support the Dream Act, the reform of the Immigration and Naturalization System, a path to citizenship for undocumented individuals and protection of workers from exploitation by employers.

Democrats support a criminal justice system that is humane. Democrats support community policing, stronger prevention practice and tough punishment for those who commit violent crimes.

My mom delivered her values in sayings. “You can’t lie down with dogs and not get up with fleas.” When I meet a person who still supports Trump, I simply say, “I didn’t realize you had such a low regard for the truth and such high regard for men who condone sexual assault against women.”

If they don’t speak to me again, well, at least I know I won’t get fleas.
