Breaking down the reactions to Ohio State's exclusion from the College Football Playoff.
The final ranking
The only real question ahead of the announcement of the top four teams who would head into the 2017 College Football Playoff was whether Ohio State's win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship would be enough to vault them into the final spot over Alabama.
The debate was ended Sunday morning when the College Football Playoff Committee announced that Alabama would take the fourth seed, pushing Ohio State into fifth (with Wisconsin coming in sixth).
The reaction from college football fans and analysts on Twitter was swift, and fell into roughly four categories:
Letdown for Buckeyes
Obviously, Ohio State fans were let down by the decision, to say the least.
Ohio State wins a conference with 3 top 10 teams and doesn’t even make the playoff. Unbelievable— The Buckeye Nut (@TheBuckeyeNut) December 3, 2017
Last time Alabama was "unequivocally" better than Ohio State 🤷🏼♂️ pic.twitter.com/pgZ1GV3jaW— C Griff (@CGriff100) December 3, 2017
Glee from the OSU haters
Meanwhile, Ohio State's haters could hardly wait to rub it in the Buckeyes' faces.

Love the hypocritical Ohio state fans crying about the playoffs. Do y’all not remember you were literally in Alabama’s position last year? 😂— Peters We Trust (@HarbaughWeTrust) December 3, 2017
Can we all take a moment and come together as one......in order to laugh at Ohio State fans— Brent Cochran (@BrentCochran1) December 3, 2017
Our prayers have been answered. Thank you playoff commitee for doing us all a favor and not putting Ohio State into the playoffs 🙏🏼🙏🏼— Jon Flatley (@Jflatley22) December 3, 2017

Consternation among others
The third category of reactions was fans and analysts who were confused by the decision.
CFP dropping Wisconsin to only 6, above USC, makes Bama choice even more puzzling. They’re saying that Ohio State win was big. In the end, it’s clear resume didn’t carry the room. Slippery slope when games and game results do not matter.— Travis Haney (@travhaney) December 3, 2017
I think Bama is better than Ohio state. But Conference champs need to go. Need to make it 8 teams. Until then it's a joke.— Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) December 3, 2017
I'm no Ohio State fan. BUT THE BUCKEYES JUST GOT ALL-TIME ROBBED OF THE FOURTH SPOT IN THE PLAYOFFS. OHIO STATE IS BETTER THAN ALABAMA, WHICH GOT DOMINATED BY AUBURN AND WHOSE DEFENSE GAVE UP 150+ RUSHING THE LAST THREE GAMES.— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) December 3, 2017
Do conference championships matter? SOS matter? Worse move is Wisconsin over USC than Bama over Ohio State. Lots of answers committee...— Yogi Roth (@YogiRoth) December 3, 2017
Ohio State has only itself to blame by losing by 31 to Iowa. But the Alabama-is-clearly-better argument is a soft one. Very few thought OSU would beat Bama in 2014 CFP.— Bill Rabinowitz (@brdispatch) December 3, 2017
Factors the #CFBPlayoff Committee takes into consideration:— RedditCFB (@RedditCFB) December 3, 2017
• Championships won
• Strength of schedule
• Comparative outcomes of common opponents
• Being Alabama
No one to blame but themselves?
And finally, many fans pointed to Ohio State's big loss to Iowa during the regular season as an obvious sign that they didn't belong in the playoffs.
I hate Bama but if you don't think they deserve to be in the playoff for their one loss you are out of your damn mind, their only loss is to a very good Auburn team, Ohio State has two losses one to Iowa by 30 points lol and Clemson lost to Syracus— Michael Bartlett (@JM_Bartlett) December 3, 2017
Don't lose to Iowa by 31 points, don't leave your playoff odds to the committee. Ohio State has no one to blame but itself.— Ben Axelrod (@BenAxelrod) December 3, 2017
I'm certainly disappointed, but you just can't lose to Iowa by 31. If that's a 3 point loss then no doubt Ohio State is in imo.— tOSURecruiting (@tOSURecruiting) December 3, 2017
To all the Ohio State fans complaining about scheduling “cupcakes”- You lost to Iowa, a cupcake team, BY 31 #CFBPlayoff— username mcusernameface (@Stoptheviolenz) December 3, 2017
