EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — The Eau Claire Regis High School boys basketball team did all they could to try and contain Bronson Koenig.
The new wrinkles they tried, however, didn’t come close to phasing the Aquinas guard.
Koenig scored 26 points and dished out six assists, as he picked apart the Ramblers’ 1-2-2 zone, and led the Blugolds to a 61-48 nonconference victory to claim the Bishop’s Cup.
With the win, Aquinas improves to 2-0, while Regis falls to 0-3.
“(Koenig) is the equilizer, he’s so good, he can get points himself but his passing is remarkable,” Aquinas coach Rick Schneider said. “But because of our youth, I feel there are times where we don’t compete as hard as we need to, and that was really our focus tonight.
“We need to get closer to playing hard for 32 minutes rather than 22.”
Quinn McCartney also added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Blugolds.
“We’ve just got to keep our foot on the pedal,” Koenig said. “Don’t give up just because we got a lead. Keep scoring, keep playing defense.
“Just keep the intensity up.”
