Matt Thomas thought he was in for nothing more than studying for finals on Thursday night.

Instead, his recruiting picture changed dramatically with a phone call from University of Wisconsin men’s basketball coach Bo Ryan.

Ryan called the Onalaska High School junior with a scholarship offer from the Badgers.

“I wasn’t expecting it,” said Thomas, who acknowledged more contact with Wisconsin recently. “It’s a great thing to hear that a home-state school wants you to come there and play.”

Thomas, a 6-foot-4 guard who is averaging 21.8 points per game for the top-ranked Hilltoppers (11-1), is the second Coulee Region player in the Class of 2013 to get an offer from Ryan. Aquinas junior Bronson Koenig has already verbally committed to Wisconsin.

Thomas said last week that Minnesota, Iowa State and Virginia have been making the hardest pushes for him.
