SPARTA — Joe Stekel has been around the Coulee Region basketball scene since the early 1980s, when he was a UW-La Crosse student helping coach the Aquinas girls.
Since then, Stekel has coached for the La Crosse Catbirds, both UW-L and Viterbo, and Bangor High School.
Stekel reached another milestone on Friday, picking up his first win as coach of the Logan boys, who defeated Sparta 57-44 in an MVC game.
“I haven’t honestly thought about it from that standpoint but I’m happy for the kids,” Stekel said. “There’ll be more coming I hope. It was more about the kids and them realizing what it takes to win.”
The Rangers (1-1, 1-0 MVC) were led by seniors Vince Kube (16 points) and Ryan Koel (15) and junior Jonah Waite (14).
“That’s what we’re going to need is those three to step it up for us,” Stekel said. “They have that ability; teams can’t single out any one player for us.”
Sparta (2-1, 0-1) took a 7-0 lead and was ahead 18-12 at the end of the first quarter before the Rangers went on a 14-4 second-quarter run to take the lead for good.
Mitchell Pauley led the Spartans with 12 points.
