MENOMONIE, Wis. — Senior quarterback Isaac Handland scored three touchdowns, but they weren’t enough to get the Holmen High School football team an upset victory in a WIAA Division second-round playoff game at top-seeded Menomonie on Friday.

The Vikings (8-3) fell behind early, and the Mustangs (11-0) pulled away for a 34-20 victory to earn a spot in the state quarterfinals.

Powerhouse running back Justin Evans, who recorded all of Menomonie’s touchdowns as it beat Holmen for a second time this season.

The Mustangs also beat the Vikings 49-14 in the second week of the regular season.

Handland put Holmen on the board in the second quarter after a 54-yard run with 4 minutes, 30 seconds on the clock. Handland’s night didn’t end there after a 2-yard touchdown run was followed up by an 8-yard TD run with less than 2 minutes left.

Handland rushed for 158 yards and completed one pass for 13 yards. He finished his season with 739 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.

Drew Becker followed with 67 rushing yards to move his season total to 1,453. Holmen rushed for 275 yards against the Mustangs.

Evans led the Mustangs with 187 rushing yards to boost his total to 1,760 with 30 touchdowns.

Division 3

Rice Lake 42, Onalaska 13

RICE LAKE, Wis. — The Warriors ran out to a 28-0 halftime lead as Bill Brown and Brandon Sutton each scored two rushing touchdowns before Onalaska (9-2) scored one. Sutton added two more in the third quarter and had 97 yards on 15 carries. Brown rushed for 89 yards on seven carries. Rice Lake had 370 yards rushing, 186 between Sutton and Brown.

Conner Haggerty caught a 19-yard pass from Noah Skifton in the third quarter for a Hilltopper touchdown. Skifton added a touchdown of his own in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard run.

Nathan Lubinsky led Onalaska with 67 yards rushing on 14 carries and 43 yards receiving on five catches. Skifton passed for 129 yards, going 12-for-21 and finishes the season with 1,911 yards passing and 24 touchdowns with 985 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns.

Antigo 21, West Salem 0

ANTIGO, Wis. — The Redbirds scored twice in the first half and once in the second to eliminate the Panthers (8-3). No other information was reported.

Division 5

Clinton 28, Prairie du Chien 6

CLINTON, Wis. — The Cougars (11-0) scored 21 points in the second quarter to build a 21-6 lead of the Blackhawks (8-3) at the half.

The top-seeded Cougars had two touchdowns from Tyler Halsted, one from Zach Krause and an interception Kenny Ballmer ran 45 yards for a touchdown. Krause had 140 yards rushing on 16 carries.

Prairie du Chien’s Drake Coleman caught a 15-yard pass from Gavin Gillitzer for the Blackhawks’ lone score. Gillitzer completed 16 of 37 passes for 235 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Ben Riter caught six passes for 112 yards, and Tyler Smock caught four for 52 yards.

Division 6

Unity 34, Melrose-Mindoro 31

MELROSE — Unity returned a kickoff late in the fourth quarter to knock off the top-seeded Mustangs.

Melrose-Mindoro took a 31-28 lead when Andy Antony caught a touchdown pass from Drew Blaken, but Unity returned the kickoff to the end zone for the victory.

Melrose-Mindoro, which held a 24-21 lead at the half, ends its season at 9-2, and fourth-seeded Unity (9-2) face third-seeded Eau Claire Regis in the quarterfinals.

Unity held a 28-24 lead in the fourth quarter as the Melrose-Mindoro defense made a stop on fourth-and-short to set up its go-ahead touchdown.
