WHAT: 48th WIAA state championships
WHEN: 2 p.m. Friday (team competition) and 11:15 a.m. Saturday (individual competition)
WHERE: Wisconsin Rapids High School, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.
TEAM COMPETITIONS: The Viroqua co-op and the West Salem co-op teams will be part of Friday’s Division 2 field. This is the 11th time for Viroqua — in its various forms — and the eighth for West Salem’s cop in its various forms. The two teams with the most appearances are Mount Horeb (31) and River Falls (28). West Salem was fourth in last season’s state meet, and Viroqua was 10th.
DIVISION 1 COMPETITORS: Holmen freshman Kabryn Burns qualified from the Wisconsin Rapids sectional as an all-around competitor, and senior teammate Emma Truchan qualified on the balance beam Central/Logan sophomore Caelen Lansing qualified for the all-around out of the Madison Memorial sectional.
DIVISION 2 COMPETITORS: West Salem co-op—Anna Gorski (floor exercise), Elle Tschumper (all-around), Emma O’Flaherty (uneven bars), Maria Lyga (balance beam); Viroqua co-op—Lydia Korn (all-around), Kayden Cramer (vaulting and uneven bars), Katrina Koppa (balance beam); Westby—Valeria Nussbaumer (vault)
DIVISION 2 NOTES: Tschumper placed second on the bars and 11th in the all-around last season. … River Falls senior Sam Krueger seeks a third title in the floor exercise after scoring a 9.83 last year, which was the highest in state meet history. Krueger won the West Salem sectional all-around title, winning the vault, balance beam and floor exercise. … Viroqua co-op sophomore Lydia Korn defeated Dodgeville/Mineral Point’s Miah Lemanski for the sectional all-around title at the Tomah sectional meet. Lemanski finished fifth at the all-around last year at state. … Korn was an all-around qualifier as a freshman last season and wound up 15th.
