The La Crosse Loggers, who struggled in the first half of the Northwoods League season, are off to a much better start in the second half.

That, in part, is due to Korey Lee and Cameron Cannon.

Lee lofted a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Cannon to slide safely into home as the throw from Duluth’s right-fielder got past the catcher to give the Loggers a 6-5 walk-off victory over the Huskies Friday night before 3,525 fans. It was the second night in a row where the Loggers staged a ninth-inning rally to earn the win.

The victory pushed the Loggers’ second-half record to 2-1, and overall mark to 16-21. Duluth fell to 2-1 and 17-21 overall.

Luke Rasmussen had a big night for the Loggers, going 3-for-5 with a triple and driving in two runs. Lee also finished with two RBI for La Crosse, which finished with eight hits.

Charlie Fletcher came on in relief with one out in the ninth and struck out two to end the inning and earn the win.

LEGION BASEBALL: Holmen pushed its record to 13-5 with a 9-4 win over Merrill in the Merrill Tournament Friday night. Mitch Torud went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in three runs for Holmen, while Austin Braund drove in two runs. Zach Olson also had two hits for Holmen.

Braund was strong on the mound, striking out 12 and walking three to earn the win.

Holmen is back in action today, as it faces D.C. Everest at 2:30 p.m. and Rhinelander at 5 p.m.

AMATEUR BASEBALL: Connor Nelson rapped a RBI single in the first inning, then blasted a two-run home run in the third to power the La Crescent amateur baseball team past the La Crosse 35ers Friday night in a MVL game.

Mannie DeLaRosa also had two hits for La Crescent (12-4, 8-3), which led 5-0 after three innings. C.J. Favre pitched seven innings to earn the win, while Tony Mueller was tagged with the loss. Mueller struck out seven and walked two in eight innings for the 35ers, who are 4-4 in MVL action.
