Applications for the Housing Choice Voucher Program opened March 1 for rental assistance to low-income individuals and families.

The rental assistance from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is administered by the Monroe County Housing Authority.

Applications are available at:

  • Monroe County Housing Authority office,1108 West Wisconsin St., Sparta
  • Families First office, 1118 West Veterans St., in Tomah.

Applications cannot be mailed out, but a friend or family member can pick up an application for someone else.

Applications will only be available for distribution and accepted for a limited time. Completed applications will be reviewed in the order they are returned to the office of the housing authority. They can be turned in by mail. Incomplete applications will not be processed.

The rental properties must have rent and utilities at or below the fair market rent and payment standards established by HUD. Landlords and tenants must sign a lease for at least one year. Landlords must sign a contract accepting the rental assistance from the housing authority on behalf of the tenant.

The housing authority provided over $345,000 for rental assistance to Monroe County residents in 2017. Two-thirds of those assisted through the Housing Choice Voucher Program are elderly over the age of 62 or receiving Supplemental Security Income through the Social Security Administration. The average household income of participants is $15,567 annually.

Combined with the other programs administered by the Monroe County Housing Authority, $535,545 of federal funds was provided for rental assistance in 2017 for Monroe County residents.
