Tuesday marked the unofficial end of summer as it was the first day of the 2017-18 school year for most students in the Tomah Area School District.
Students who returned to class were greeted by teachers, principals, school bus drivers, crossing guards and aides to make their first day welcoming and comfortable.
In the public schools, it was the first day of class for 10 of the district’s 11 school buildings. The exception was Lemonweir Elementary School, which began as a year-round school for the first time July 18.
Two private schools, Queen of the Apostles Catholic School and St. Paul Lutheran School began classes Aug. 28.
Barring snow days, the school year runs through June 5, 2018, and Tomah High School will conduct commencement exercises Saturday, May 26.
