An area lawmaker has been diagnosed with leukemia.

State Rep. Ed Brooks, R-Reedsburg, issued a press release Wednesday announcing his cancer diagnosis.

“I’m writing about it so that the rumors of my demise don’t run rampant,” Brooks wrote. “I’m very much alive, and I plan to fight it every step of the way.

“I love the work I’m doing representing you in the state Assembly, so I’m also writing to ask for your patience during this initial treatment period.”

The 74-year-old Brooks has served in the Assembly since 2009. He said his health will dictate his future in the state Legislature.

“It’s too early for me to make a decision about carrying on as your representative based on how I feel right now, but if I feel that I’m not up to the job after continued treatment, then I’ll talk to my colleagues about next steps,” he wrote.

He asked people to “please keep me in your thoughts and prayers, but don’t pray too hard; I might end up in heaven too soon.”

Brooks’ 50th Assembly District includes all of Juneau County and the village of Kendall and towns of Clifton and Glendale in Monroe County.
