A pedestrian sustained serious injuries after being struck by a car Tuesday in Tomah.

According to the Tomah Police Department, a Dodge Stratus driven by 17-year-old Natalie Fleming was northbound on Superior Avenue shortly after 3:30 p.m., when it hit a 14-year-old pedestrian in the crosswalk at East Brownell Street.

Fleming told police she was unable to stop because her brakes malfunctioned, and police said the condition of the brakes "may have been a contributing factor" in the accident. The department said there were other vehicles stopped in the intersection at the time of the collision.

The pedestrian sustained what police described as "significant, but non-life threatening, injuries."

The police department was assisted by Tomah Area Ambulance Service, Tomah Fire Department, Monroe County Communications Center and numerous bystanders at the scene.
