A new press box at Tomah High School’s E.J. McKean Field should be ready by the start of next football season.
The Tomah School Board voted 7-0 to move ahead with a $138,000 structure that nearly doubles the capacity of the existing facility.
School board president Brian Hennessey said the existing press box lacks sufficient space and needs to be replaced.
“Basically, it has outlived its useful life,” Hennessey said.
He said the press box is used for a wide range of activities, including track and field and community events such as the Relay for Life and Remembering Jesse Parker Run.
“It gets a lot of use throughout the year − it’s not just for football games,” he said.
The Tomah Gridiron Club will contribute $65,000 toward the cost of the project. Board member John McMullen said the Gridiron Club’s contribution is critical. He said the board hasn’t been able to make the press box a priority because “programs and staffing were more urgent. With support from the Gridiron Club, we can justify getting this done.”
