“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” − Matthew 25:31-40 (NIV)
Twenty-one thousand people die of starvation each day in this world. That is according to the Hunger and World Poverty website. Now, those numbers are from a year or two ago and may not be 100 percent correct for the year 2017. The number may be a few thousand less. The number unfortunately may be a few thousand more. I feel that any way you look at it, even one person is too many to die of starvation in this world.
We truly believe that when most people hear about a statistic like this that they feel compelled to do something about it. Yet I am sure many of us feel, “What can I do? I am just one person living in Tomah, WI.” This past July 14-15 at the Tomah Fairgrounds, all could see firsthand what people from Tomah and the surrounding area could do to feed God’s starving children!
Starting back in January of this year, a team of people from the area got together to bring the group Feed My Starving Children to the Tomah area for another Mobile Pack. The goal was to raise $23,000 and to mobilize 500 amazing volunteers to package 100,000 meals to send to starving people all over the world. By the grace of God and the tremendous outpouring of love and kindness of the people of this area, our goals were met! Thank you so much!
This was the fourth year that our group has brought in Feed My Starving Children to do a Mobile Pack in the area. Starting in 2011 and proceeding every other year, over 2,000 amazing people of the Tomah area have come together to package well over 400,000 meals and have raised close to $100,000. People have come from all over the area − Eau Claire, La Crosse, Norwalk, Cashton, Wilton, Black River Falls, Wonewoc − just about every town and village within 50 miles of Tomah to be a part of this worthwhile endeavor!
Yet I know that some out there may say why hold a Mobile Pack? Even with all of your efforts and good intentions, you truly are not solving world hunger. People still die every day from starvation. We must concede their point that we are not solving the world hunger problem, but we are making an impact. When we brought our first Mobile Pack to Tomah, we sold shirts that stated that one in seven people will die of starvation each day. Today that figure is one in nine. Who knows what that figure will be in another two years? Maybe one in 11. Who knows?
What we do know is that in two years we will start up once again to bring another Mobile Pack to the Tomah area. We will once again start the joy of fundraising over $23,000 to package 100,000 meals to feed starving people all over this world. And we will be asking YOU again to come and give of your time, your resources and your love to help feed starving people. Why?
“Then those ‘sheep’ are going to say, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink? And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?’ Then the King will say, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.’” Matthew 37-40 – The Message
Thank you all again for all the wonderful support that you gave to us in this last Feed My Starving Children experience! We look forward to continuing to make a difference in this world.
