The Black River Falls/Tomah girls hockey team ran its winning streak to seven straight before running into the number-two team in the state.

The Eau Claire Area All-Stars halted the Tigers’ string with a 7-4 decision Tuesday at the Lunda Ice Center in Black River Falls. The winning streak had reached seven Saturday with a 5-2 victory over the Somerset-based Western Wisconsin Stars at the Lunda Center.

The ninth-ranked Tigers will take a 13-7-1 record into their regular-season finale Saturday at home vs. Lakeland starting at 4 p.m.

Black River Falls/Tomah coach Oak Moser said the Eau Claire game was a good test for his team as it prepares for tournament play. The Tigers earned the number-two seed in the Middleton Sectional and will host Stoughton in a sectional quarterfinal Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. in Black River Falls.

“When you play the top teams in the state, you see where your focus needs to be going forward, and we will learn from this experience and look to start another winning streak with our next game,” Moser said.

Eau Claire (21-2) erased an early 2-0 deficit and broke the game open with four goals in the third period.

Four different skaters − Savannah Holcomb, Reghan Yourell, Ellie Steinhoff and Baleigh Johnson − accounted for Tomah’s goals.

The victory over Western Wisconsin avenged a 4-1 loss to the Stars in Somerset Dec. 23. The rematch was a team effort as four of the Tigers’ five goals came off double assists. Steinhoff and Johnson were the assist combination on Tomah’s first three goals, two of which were scored by Holcomb.

“We were able to control the play for the most part and generate a great deal of offense,” Moser said. “The team continues to improve with regard to pace, puck management and discipline, which have been our focus all year.”

The Tigers outshot the Stars 50-23.
