Khloe Spors

Khloe Spors skates ahead of two Lakeland opponents during the Tigers' 4-0 victory Saturday in Black River Falls. Spors ranks seventh in the state in goals scored with 27.

The regular season is over, but the Black River Falls/Tomah girls hockey team is seeded to play a pair of home tournament games.

The Tigers earned the number-two seed in the eight-team Middleton Sectional and will open tournament play by hosting Stoughton Thursday, Feb. 15. Faceoff is 7 p.m. at Lunda Ice Center.

If the Tigers defeat Stoughton, they’ll host a Sectional semifinal Tuesday, Feb. 20 against either Sun Prairie or Viroqua.

The Sectional final is Saturday, Feb. 24 at Madison Ice Arena.

The Tigers have won nine of their last 10 games and are ranked ninth in the state with a 15-7-1 record. Tigers coach Oak Moser said his team has done a good job keeping the accolades in perspective.

“We talk all the time about what’s important right now and what’s a distraction,” Moser said. “Ratings and all those things − they’re distractions. It’s nice to get the recognition ... but at the end of the day, you have to play the game, and the other team doesn’t care.”

The Stoughton Icebergs is a co-op that includes Deerfield, Evansville, McFarland, Monona Grove and Oregon. The Icebergs are 6-16-0 but bring a credible defense to Black River Falls that allowed just 2.86 goals per game. They were swept 8-0 and 7-0 by Rock County, the Sectional’s number-one seed, but didn’t give up more than six goals in any other game. They lost a pair of 2-1 decisions to Viroqua.

In addition to their state ranking, the Tigers have a pair of individuals who stand out among their state peers. Goaltender Josie Mathison leads the state in save percentage at .936 and is fifth in goals-against average at 1.82. Khloe Spors is seventh in goals scored with 27.
