Friday’s contest came down to foul shots, and that wasn’t a good thing for the Tomah Timberwolves.

La Crosse Logan buried 10 of 11 foul shots in the final 2:17 to salt away a 66-54 victory over Tomah in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball contest at Tomah High School.

It was a disappointing loss for the Timberwolves, who defeated Logan 79-71 in overtime Dec. 15. Tomah coach Brad Plueger said his team couldn’t finish around the rim or convert at the foul line. The Timberwolves were four of 14 from the line and 22 of 60 from the field.

“That won’t win you many basketball games, no matter good you are on the defensive side or what kind of defense you play,” Plueger said. “We didn’t deserve to win.”

The Timberwolves still had their chances. They were ahead 43-41 when Kyle Kroener made a layup with 11:30 left, but Logan’s Josh McGrath countered with a 3-pointer, and Logan led the rest of the game.

The Rangers pushed the lead to 52-45 before the Timberwolves rallied to within 54-52 after Trey Gnewikow made one of two foul shots with 4:01 left. However, the Timberwolves squandered two chances to tie the game before Logan launched its foul-shooting streak.

Logan jumped off to a 7-0 lead, but Tomah appeared to be in control after back-to-back buckets from Kroener gave the Timberwolves a 27-20 advantage. However, Logan drilled three 3-pointers in the final five minutes of the half and took a 35-32 lead at halftime.

“We weren’t tough enough to finish around the rim with any type of contact, and ... then we get to the free throw line, we missed,” Plueger said. “We’re getting good looks; we’re getting to the rim.”

Josh Dahlke led the Timberwolves with 17 points, and Peter Brey had 13.

Logan was led by Matthew Borsheim, who had 23 points and was 10 of 11 from the foul line.

The Timberwolves held Logan’s leading scorer, C.J. Siegel, in check. Siegel, who scored 20 points in the first Tomah-Logan contest, was held to just 10 in the rematch.

Tomah’s record fell to 9-6 overall and 3-4 in the MVC.

Logan improved to 6-8 overall and 4-3 in MVC play.

The Timberwolves travel to Black River Falls Thursday for a nonconference game and return home for MVC action against Sparta Tuesday, Feb. 6. Tipoff is 5:45 p.m. at Tomah High School and is the first game of a boys/girls varsity doubleheader.
