It’s said that pitching and defense win baseball games, but the Tomah High School baseball team won with pretty much just pitching Thursday.
Tomah got a brilliant performance from its pitching staff to claim a 2-0 victory over Marshfield at Dennis Senz Field. The Timberwolves improved to 2-1, while Marshfield fell to 0-1.
The pitching allowed the Timberwolves to overcome five errors and a batting order that generated just two hits.
“We have had good pitching all three games this year,” Tomah coach Ryan Brookman said. “We ... have a great deal of pitching that will serve us well in the coming six weeks.”
Connor Prielipp, Travis Von Haden and Kyle Kroener combined for a one-hitter, with Prielipp tossing five innings and earning the win. He struck out eight and walked one; he also had the team’s lone RBI.
Tomah’s relief pitchers were perfect over the final two innings. Travis Von Haden retired the side in order in the sixth, and Kyle Kroener did the same thing in the seventh.
Brookman is anxious to give his pitchers more work.
“I am frustrated that I haven’t been able to get more innings for our pitchers,” he said. “Some guys that will need to help us haven’t seen the mound yet. They are working hard and will be ready when they are called upon.”
Brookman is waiting for the team’s hitting to come around and refused to blame the weather for the lack of scoring output.
“We were caught looking at too many close fastballs again,” Brookman said. “We need to and will get better.”
He said the defense also needs to improve. Of the 12 runs the Timberwolves have given up this season, only three are earned. He said all five of Tomah’s errors Thursday came “on routine plays.”
“We won’t be able to overcome that as the season progresses,” Brookman said. “When we get outside more, this will improve.”
The bad weather returned Friday, which postponed Tomah’s scheduled nonconference game against Chippewa Falls.
Tomah’s first two MVC games against La Crosse Central and La Crosse Logan were postponed. The home game against Central has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 12, while the Timberwolves will play at La Crosse Logan May 18. Weather permitting, the Timberwolves will play three MVC contests in four days this week.
