It was another sterling defensive effort from the Tomah Timberwolves.
Tomah’s defense squeezed La Crosse Aquinas into a 15-point first half en route to a 51-42 Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball victory Friday at Aquinas High School.
The Timberwolves improved to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in the MVC. They have held six of their last eight opponents under 50 points. Coach Brad Plueger said it was the fourth straight game that Tomah played exclusively man-to-man defense. He said the interior defense of Josh Dahlke and Trevor Shutter make the man-to-man work.
“Kids are starting to understand that we have a rim protector,” Plueger said. “It really helps us defend the 3-point line.”
The Timberwolves jumped off to a 7-0 lead and never trailed in the contest.
“I thought the efficiency on offense was really high in the first half, and the scoring was spread out,” Plueger said.
Tomah was led by post player Josh Dahlke, who had 14 points and five assists. Trey Gnewikow added 10, and the Timberwolves got a combined 10 points from bench players Mason Brandt and Mason Gerke.
Aquinas fell to 8-5 overall and 2-3 in the MVC.
The Timberwolves return home Tuesday to host La Crosse Central in an MVC matchup starting at 7:15 p.m. On Friday, they play La Crosse Logan in the second half of a boys/girls doubleheader with the girls starting at 6:15 p.m. and the boys tipping off at 7:45 p.m.
