Tomah High School went the distance to claim its only conference champion at the Mississippi Valley Conference meet Saturday.

The Tomah quartet of Trevin Nelson, Eric Tollefson, Coy Nelson and Roland Hockstedler won the 3,200-meter relay at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Memorial Stadium. It was the only first-place Tomah finish by either the boys or girls squads.

The Tomah boys finished sixth among the conference’s seven teams, and the Tomah girls finished seventh.

Tomah ran the 3,200 relay in 8 minutes, 26.71 seconds and finished 4 ½ seconds ahead of second-place La Crosse Central. Holmen was another 23 seconds behind in third place.

Freshman Madison Mazur was the top Tomah girl. She accounted for 11 of Tomah’s 21 team points in the two hurdles events. She placed second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.54 seconds, just .03 seconds behind winner Kylee Jostad of Holmen. In the 100 hurdles, Mazur was fifth with a time of 17.12 seconds.

Three other Tomah girls entries were placewinners.

Freshman Hannah Wilcox-Borg finished third in the 3200 behind a pair of Onalaska freshman twins. Wilcox-Borg’s time was 11:38.73.

Charlotte Luebke took seventh in the discus with a throw of 90 feet, eight inches, just two inches behind the sixth-place finisher.

Tomah’s 400 relay team of Savannah Blackhawk, Ireland Chambers, Skylar Audiss and Cora Blashaski was seventh in 59.41 seconds.

In addition, wheelchair entrant Sevanna Utesch threw the shot put 7-5 and posted a 100-dash time of 38.41 seconds. Neither figured in the team scoring but both established meet records.

Onalaska won the team title, the school’s first girls championship since 2009. Team scores: Onalaska 198, Holmen 155.5, La Crosse Logan 127.5, La Crosse Central 83, La Crosse Aquinas 51, Sparta 35, Tomah 21.

Fourth—Franklin, shot put, 43-8 ¼

Fifth—800 relay (Hyatt, Brandon Winfield, Jalen Figgins, Dawson Ollendick), 1:34.63

Sixth—1600 relay (Figgins, Tollefson, Ollendick, Winfield), 3:39.99; Dalton Blihovde, high jump, 5-8; Nate Boulton, pole vault, 10-6

Seventh—Caleb Lenning, 1600, 4:43.32; 400 relay (Hyatt, Nathaniel Spears, Dawson Klump, Ollendick), :47.28; Cahil Arity, discus, 116-6

Eighth—Hyatt, 100, :11.52; Figgins, 200, :23.53; Eugene Peterson, 3200, 10:35.52.

Logan won its third MVC boys title in five seasons. Team scores: Logan 166, Central 161.5, Holmen 128, Aquinas 74, Onalaska 62, Tomah 60.5, Sparta 44.

Tomah concludes the regular season with an invitational at Sparta Thursday, May 17 starting with field events at 4 p.m. and running events at 4:30 p.m.

The post-season begins Monday, May 21 with a trip to the WIAA Division 1 Regional at Baraboo. Tomah and Baraboo will be joined by Holmen, La Crosse Central, La Crosse Logan, Onalaska, Portage, Reedsburg and Sparta.

The top four in each event advance to the Middleton Sectional Thursday, May 24.
