The Tomah High School boys and girls cross country teams wrapped up the regular season with a trip to the Wisconsin Rapids Invitational Saturday.
The meet was held at The Ridges Golf Course, the site of the state cross country meet, but the course was different than the one that will be used during the state run. Twenty teams competed in a meet that featured some of the premier cross country programs in the state.
The top individual finisher for Tomah was Hannah Wilcox-Borg in the girls race. She ran the five-kilometer (3.1-mile) course in 20 minutes, 8 seconds and took eighth overall in a field of over 120 runners.
Brielle Harmel also finished in the top half of the field. She was 52nd with a time of 23:01.
Tomah’s other girls runners were Brooke Bakken (23:40), Brooke Lucka (23:47) and Kyrie Ambrosia-Brown (31:36).
The Tomah girls finished 12th of out 15 teams. Tomah coach Jon Heesch said it was a solid effort from a small but improving squad.
“They are peaking at the right time of the season,” Heesch said.
The Tomah boys finished 11th out of 21 teams and had three runners finish in the top half of the field.
Trevin Nelson led the Timberwolves by placing 35th with a time of 17:38.
Caleb Lenning (54th, 18:07) and Coy Nelson (64th, 18:20) also finished in the top half of the field.
Rounding out Tomah’s varsity were Weston Boettcher (18:59), Matthew Holtz (18:59), Eric Tollefson (19:19), Shandii Begay (19:30) and Micah Winchell (20:23).
“The boys all pushed through the rain and slick course to run solid times after having raced three meets in the past eight days,” Heesch said. “It was a wet and soggy day with rain falling throughout the whole morning. It was a great experience for our runners to be able to race in adverse weather conditions.”
The junior varsity race was run separately. Jesse Smith finished 40th in a field of over 200 jayvee runners with a time of 20:00.
Tomah’s other jayvee boys: Thor Lass (21:09), Daniel Swanson (21:46), Austin Lyden (22:02), Sabin Koss (22:34), Charlie Ella (22:36) and Eric Wilcox-Borg (27:31).
The Timberwolves compete at the Mississippi Valley Conference meet Thursday, Oct. 12 at Maple Grove Cross Country Course in West Salem. The meet starts with the junior varsity girls race at 3:45 p.m., followed by the jayvee boys at 4:20 p.m., the varsity girls at 4:50 p.m. and the varsity boys at 5:20 p.m.
After that, it’s nine days off before the WIAA Division 1 Sectional competition at Menomonie.
