Goal kick

Tomah goalkeeper Nolan Stees kicks the ball clear during Thursday’s contest against Onalaska.

The Tomah High School boys soccer team hung tough with Onalaska for most of the match before losing 4-0 in a Mississippi Valley Conference contest Tuesday at Veterans Field.

Onalaska took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute, but the Timberwolves kept the game competitive until Onalaska broke the contest open with goals in the 57th and 66th minutes. The Hilltoppers scored their final goal in the 82nd minute.

Tomah goalkeeper Nolan Stees made 14 saves.

The Timberwolves’ record fell to 1-14 overall and 1-12 in the MVC. Onalaska improved its MVC mark to 6-3-2.

Tomah has a golden opportunity for a victory Tuesday, Oct. 10 when it hosts La Crosse Aquinas in a 5 p.m. contest at Veterans Field. The Timberwolves’ lone victory of the season was a 5-1 triumph at Aquinas Sept. 12.

The regular season ends with a Thursday, Oct. 12 trip to La Crosse Central, where the Timberwolves will be looking to avenge a 1-0 home loss to the Red Raiders Sept. 14.

The post-season begins Oct. 19, when the Timberwolves will likely hit the road for a regional semifinal in the first round of the WIAA Division 2 playoffs.
