The Tomah High School wrestling team wrapped up a second-place finish in the Mississippi Valley Conference with a 54-12 victory over La Crosse Aquinas Jan. 25 at Aquinas High School.
Tomah finished the MVC season with a 4-1 record and can finish no worse than second in the MVC.
“It means a lot to the kids as they had to work hard to finish in second,” Tomah coach Jeff Von Haden said. “It let them meet a goal we had set at the beginning of the season and hopefully lets us carry that momentum in the tournament series.”
The Timberwolves still have a long-shot chance at tying for the MVC title if Sparta defeats Holmen in the final match of the season Feb. 1. A Sparta victory over Holmen, ranked first in Division 1, would create a three-way tie for the championship.
The Timberwolves won seven of the 10 contested matches. Tomah’s closest victory came at 170 pounds, where Jairon Pierce stepped from the junior varsity and won a 4-2 decision over Andrew Topolski. Pierce took the lead with a pair of first-period takedowns and limited Topolski to a pair of escape points.
Tomah wrestlers who won by pin were Hayden Larson (285), Cody Zimmerman (120), Braden Bemis (132), Travis Von Haden (152) and Connor Von Haden (182). Owen Walters won a 13-6 decision at 145.
“Everyone wrestled well again, being aggressive and on the attack,” Von Haden said.
Tomah closes out the regular season Friday, Feb. 2 with a nonconference dual at Eau Claire Memorial. After that, the Timberwolves get eight days off before beginning the postseason at the WIAA Division 1 Baraboo Regional. The top four wrestlers from the regional advance to the Feb. 17 Waunakee Sectional. The top team at the regional advances to the team sectional Feb. 13 at Verona.
