The Tomah High School volleyball team nailed down a winning Mississippi Valley Conference season with a 25-20, 16-25, 25-16, 25-13 victory at La Crosse Central Thursday.
It marks Tomah’s fourth winning season in the last five years. The Timberwolves ended the MVC season with a two-match winning streak and a 7-5 record.
“We played a consistent match,” Tomah coach Sarah Walters said. “We worked on a couple of different things preparing for sectional.”
Senior outside hitter Reis Derousseau led the Timberwolves with 18 kills, while senior setter Abbey Larsen lofted 16 assists.
Maggie Popp paced Central with 12 kills.
Despite a winning conference record, the Timberwolves drew a 13th seed in the 15-team WIAA Division 1 Baraboo Sectional and will travel to Middleton for a regional semifinal match Thursday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.
Walters believes her girls can compete with the Cardinals, who finished 8-1 in the Big Eight Conference and tied with Sun Prairie and Verona for the conference championship. Tomah traveled to Madison Memorial of the Big Eight two seasons ago and won a regional semifinal.
“We have nothing to lose,” Walters said.
The winner advances to a regional final match Saturday, Oct. 21 at the site of the higher remaining seed. The sectional semifinals are Thursday, Oct. 26, and the sectional final is Saturday, Oct. 28 at Baraboo High School.
