The Tomah High School wrestling team returned to Mississippi Valley Conference action Thursday with a 52-18 victory over Onalaska/Onalaska Luther at Onalaska High School.
Tomah improved its dual record to 2-0 in the MVC and 6-2 overall.
The Timberwolves won six of the 10 contested matches with Nate Boulton (138), Travis Von Haden (152), Kaden Hericks (220), Caden Griffen (106) and Cody Zimmerman (126) winning with pins.
Tomah’s other victory came at 160, where Marques Fritsche scored five takedowns and a reversal en route to a 12-4 major decision.
Two of the four matches Tomah lost were by a single point.
At 182, Tomah’s Connor Von Haden got a first-period near-fall against Zach Udermann, but Udermann got a takedown in the third period to pull out a 6-5 victory.
Hayden Larson traded escapes with Onalaska’s Adam Buege at 285, but a penalty point in the third period allowed Buege to gain a 2-1 win.
In the 195 match, Tomah’s Angel Burkhalter took a 5-1 lead into the third period against Jake Blum before getting pinned with a minute left in the match.
Tomah returns home Tuesday to face Holmen in an MVC match. Holmen is the top-ranked Division 1 team in the state. Timberwolves coach Jeff Von Haden said his team will approach the Vikings like any other opponent.
“We understand that they are really good, but we want to focus on ourselves and what we need to keep improving and getting better,” Von Haden said.
Junior varsity matches begin at 6:15 p.m. followed by the varsity at 7:15 p.m. It’s Tomah’s final varsity home match of the season.
