VIROQUA — LaVerne Turben, 88, of Viroqua passed away peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018, at Vernon Manor in Viroqua with his wife, Imogene at his side.
LaVerne was born in the town of Utica, in Crawford County, June 10, 1929, to Clarence and Selma (Grimsled) Turben. He graduated from Gays Mills High School in 1948. He married Imogene Maybee Jan. 15, 1949. LaVerne was a member of Kickapoo United Lutheran Church.
In 1951, LaVerne and Imogene moved to Beloit, Wis., and lived there for eight years, before returning to the Soldiers Grove area. LaVerne took up a career in carpentry and enjoyed that for many years until his retirement. LaVerne suffered later years from Multiple Sclerosis. LaVerne and Imogene eventually moved to Viroqua, to be closer to the care that he needed. His condition deteriorated to the point that Imogene could no longer care for him, so he went to reside at Vernon Manor for the past four years.
LaVerne will always be remembered for his quiet, gentle spirit and strong faith. He thoroughly enjoyed his family and especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed the many friendships he had over the years and appreciated the friends and family who came to visit him at Vernon Manor.
LaVerne is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Imogene of Viroqua; their son, Terry (Nancy) Turben of Janesville, Wis.; grandchildren, Johnny (Brenda) Hanson of Westby, Angela (Chris) Carley of Onalaska, Lacey Turben of Janesville; great-grandchildren, Tristina Yeiter, MacKenzie and Brennan Wygans, Lukas Hanson and Sarah Niemyjski; great-great-grandchildren, Izellah Twite and Jaxen Niemyjski. He is further survived by a sister, Helen (Howard) Hanson of Viroqua; a sister-in-law, Alice Turben of Soldiers Grove; and a son-in-law, Wendall (Alda) Hanson of Viroqua. He is also survived by host of nieces and nephews.
LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Cheryl; a grandson, Robbie; a brother, Jerald Turben; a sister, Jeanette Birkelo; sisters-in-law, Pauline Skrede, Shirley Maybee, Beverly Sokolik, Betty Maybee; and brothers-in-law, Russell Birkelo, Walter Maybee, Lawrence Skrede and Fred Sokolik.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Kickapoo United Lutheran Church at Folsom. Friends may call from noon until time of services at the church. Pastor Chuck Miller and Pastor Steve Fossum will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Sime Funeral Home of Readstown is serving the family.
