A national movement titled, “Screen-Free Week,” will be held April 30-May 6. The event is an opportunity for children, families, entire schools, and communities to rediscover the joys of life beyond the screen. It encourages participants to unplug from digital entertainment and spend free time playing, reading, daydreaming, creating, exploring, and connecting with family and friends!

McIntosh Memorial Library is partnering with the Viroqua Elementary School and Pleasant Ridge Waldorf School to bring “Screen Free Week” activities to the local community in March. Join us Tuesday, March 20, from 6-7 p.m. here at the library for Science Night. Join us in our program room for an evening of hands-on science experiments. On Wednesday, March 21, there will be a family games night at Pleasant Ridge School from 6-7 p.m. While on Thursday, March 22, Viroqua Elementary School will be providing a music and movement program from 6-7 p.m. for everyone. Joins us for one, some, or all of the activities we have scheduled during “Viroqua’s Screen Free Week.”

If you haven’t signed up for a time slot yet to use our media conversion kits, please know they will be here for about two more weeks. The two media conversion kits enable you to convert your recorded material on VHS tapes to DVDs. Patrons using the kits will need to provide their own DVDs and must abide by all copyright restrictions. You can sign up for a time slot now by logging onto our website at Once on our website select the “reserve a space” option to get started. When signing up for a time slot, please keep in mind if you have a 60-minute program recorded on a VHS tape, it will take 60 minutes to convert the material to a DVD. The kits are being made possible in part by the Winding Rivers Library System and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

We are searching for artists or local collectors to use the cases inside the library for a display. Our art display case can be used for up to four weeks at a time to display local pieces of art. If you’re an artist or someone with a unique collection, we would love to have your pieces on display! For details on how to book the display case stop by the circulation desk for an application or visit the “reserve a space” area on our website.

Stop by the Friends of the Library Bookstore and have fun exploring their featured item of the month which is “Dummies” books. These educational books provide simple instruction and information on practically every topic! The books are being featured on a table inside the store for the next few weeks.

To stay up-to-date on everything happening at the library, like the “Viroqua Library” Facebook page, visit our website at or visit us in person at 205 S. Rock Ave. in Viroqua.
