Christmas is coming, and the museum is now decorated for the upcoming holiday season. Stop by to admire our vintage Christmas ornaments and postcards, plus a toy display. Those who have read the book “Dirt Roads” by Josie Churchill, about her youth growing up near Dell, will notice that the toy display includes a special doll. This is the doll given to Josie’s cousin Ida Widner for Christmas in 1903, a doll that Josie wrote about in her story, “Christmas Dolls.”
Speaking of toys, the museum’s gift shop has old-fashioned toys for sale, such as jacks, tops, sewing cards and Jacob’s Ladders. Holiday cards, reproduction vintage postcards and Christmas tree ornaments are for sale as well. Gift shop sales help support the historical society and its mission of preserving and promoting Vernon County’s history.
The gift shop also features a variety of new and used books. History lovers will enjoy books about Vernon County’s round barns, the Civil War and steamboat disasters on the Mississippi River, among other subjects. Reference works including local atlases and church histories are also for sale. Visit the shop during the museum’s regular winter hours of Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, noon-4 p.m. Our most popular books can also be ordered from our online bookstore at vernoncountyhistory.org.
Time is running out to participate in the Vernon County Historical Society’s annual raffle. This raffle is an important fundraiser for our organization. Tickets are $5 each or five tickets for $20. Prizes include cash, ARTT season tickets and a gift certificate to the Driftless Café. The winning tickets will be drawn at noon Wednesday, Dec. 20, at the museum. Tickets may be purchased at the museum during our regular hours.
