Youth Initiative High School in Viroqua will present “Heathers: The Musical (High School Edition)” in the Landmark Center Auditorium March 2-10.
Based on the cult classic of the same name, “Heathers” is a satirical presentation of a high school experience in the late ‘80s. Told from the perspective of senior Veronica Sawyer, the audience follows her journey from “greasy little nobody” to made-over member of the untouchable queen bees (the “Heathers” at Westerburg High School. Serving in the “lip-gloss gestapo” has its consequences, and Veronica begins to garner the attention of aggressive jocks Kurt and Ram and compromise her relationships with her parents and best friend, social outcast Martha Dunstock. As Veronica wrestles with the morality of her new social status, she falls for the brooding new kid J.D., whose outsider perspective seduces her into actions that come back to haunt her. In a hyperbolic and dark look at high school through the eyes of a teenager, “Heathers” tells a story of friendship, romance, murder, lies, threats and attempts at redemption.
“Heathers: The Musical (High School Edition)” will be performed over the course of two weekends in the Landmark Center Auditorium, 500 E. Jefferson St., second floor. Evening performances are March 2, 3, 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. Matinee performances are March 4 and 10 at 2 p.m., which will be followed by talk-back sessions with the creative team and cast.
