The Viroqua School Board approved three WIAA co-ops at its meeting Feb. 28.
Board members approved the following co-ops: Girls hockey, Westby and Youth Initiative; boys hockey, Cashton, Westby and Youth Initiative; and boys tennis, Westby. All of the co-ops will be based in Viroqua.
Board members also approved the retirements of Brian Buening, Vicki Kirkeeng, Sandy Proue and Denise Kirchoff. Before the vote, District Administrator Dr. Kehl Arnson said all of them felt “it’s a good time to retire” and “for most of these folks the decision was hard.”
The Board also approved the following appointments: Linda Dregne, special education paraprofessional; Kevin Hennessy, assistant basketball coach and assistant softball coach; and Ruthie Zahm, middle school track coach.
Members of the Board also approved a resolution to proceed with a charter grant application for a Grade 7/8 program. Prior to the vote, Arnson said the program would fill the gap between Laurel High School and the Montessori school. Arnson said since the school district has started the discussion of a Grade 7/8 program, the state has received funding for grants.
“We’ll be able to file a grant to help with planning and implementation,” Arnson said. “This resolution is to show the Board approves the process.”
The School Board also approved to increase the pay structure for summer school compensation. The compensation is as follows: $100 per day for morning classes; $25 per class for afternoon session classes; $18 per hour for substitute summer school teachers; and $20 per hour for weight room supervision.
“This makes us competitive,” Arnson said. “It’s a necessary thing to bring it up to an appropriate level.”
