I have a son who was recently in the Vernon County Jail for a few months under the jail contract with Monroe County. When I thought back to my experiences as a family member, I realized there were so many things that really stand out, compared to other jails throughout Wisconsin.
Safety: In Vernon County, I knew my son was in a safe and secure environment. The jail has consistent security policies in place to prevent drugs and contraband from entering the jail. In Vernon County, there are not the horror stories of smuggled drugs, overdoses and deaths in the jail. Vernon County has also ensured that supplies and equipment within the jail blocks meet or exceed current safety standards.
Medical care: In Vernon County, the medical care is provided by Janet Reed, a local nurse who is also the Vernon County coroner. She genuinely cares about the health of the jail inmates and continuously shares her knowledge of the devastation caused by drugs. My son needed minimal medical care when he was in Vernon County, but I am confident that if he has faced any medical situation, it would have been handled immediately and appropriately by the jail staff and nurse. Vernon County provides quality cost-effective health care using a county staff member, instead of contracting out for services and gambling with inmates’ health and lives.
Professionalism: Every time I interacted with a Vernon County Jail staff person, he or she was professional and courteous. This attitude was consistent across all shifts.
As a parent, it has been challenging at times when my son has been incarcerated, but it is absolutely priceless to know that in Vernon County, he is in a safe, secure, professionally-run environment. Vernon County has set the bar high for jail standards and hopefully other counties in the future to provide a similar safe environment within their jails.
