Premium Iowa Pork has bought the land where the old Driftless Meats was located north of town. They plan to build a hog slaughtering operation there that will process 700 pigs a day. The animal waste from this CAFO (concentrated animal feeding operation) will produce enormous waste and they plan to store this waste in pools near the plant where our permeable karst geology will allow it to seep into our groundwater and ruin it. Our pristine area will be ruined by the operation; our trout steams (which produce a lot of revenue for our area), our drinking water will be poisoned, etc. This out of state corporation will only produce low-income jobs which are not desirable. I urge our our readers to vocally oppose this planned operation. Call your council member and/or county commissioner and protest this plan.
