It was a rough start for the Viroqua cooperative girls hockey team in their season opener on the road at Black River Falls Tuesday, Nov. 21. The Blackhawks started slowly, allowing two first-period goals and never recovered, falling 4-0 to the Tigers in a game played at the Milt Lunda Ice Arena.

BRF dominated play in the opening period, outshooting the Hawks by a 20 to 4 margin, and in the process grabbed the early 2-0 lead. Viroqua bounced back with a solid second period creating 13 shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net. The Tigers, with 14 shots in the period, converted on a power play goal to build a 3-0 advantage after the first 34 minutes.

The final period saw the Tigers outskating Viroqua again with a 20 to 6 shots, on goal advantage, while adding the final goal of the night.

Ivy Shonka played well in goal recording 50 saves in the loss, while BRF goaltender Josie Mathison stopped all 23 Viroqua shots.

Kloe Spoers recorded a three-goal hat-trick for BRF and added an assist, while teammate Reghan Yourell chipped in with a goal and a pair of assists. Each team was whistled for four minor penalties in the contest.

“Black River Falls is a very solid team,” said VHS coach Andy Rogers. “We just couldn’t get the puck in the net tonight.”
