Viroqua High School’s Marissa Czap plays in a home match against Reedsburg, Aug. 28. She received honorable mention all-conference honors at the Coulee Conference tourney, Sept. 23.

The Viroqua girls tennis team wrapped up regular season play last week with a match versus West Salem Tuesday, Sept. 19, and also participated in the Coulee Conference tournament hosted by Black River Falls, Saturday, Sept. 23.

Viroqua vs. West Salem

The Blackhawks were swept by the Panthers, 0-7 in their match played at West Salem.

Lizzy Hoversten lost in straight sets at No. 1 singles to Madison Dutton 0-6, 0-6. Olivia Rottman was defeated 0-6, 1-6 at singles No. 2 by Madigan Freng. Shaila Swenson lost her No. 3 match 0-6, 0-6 to Faith Holt and Brenna Rider lost by a similar score to Ashley Arneson at No. 4 singles.

The Viroqua doubles team won several game points versus the Panthers but could not pull out any set or match victories. Emma Kolden and Delilah Vance were defeated 2-6, 3-6 at No.1 doubles by Taylor Jones and Emily Vehrenkamp. Erin Baker and Elena Morton dropped their No. 2 doubles match 3-6, 2-6 to Megan Larson and Abby Richardson, and Marissa Czap and Kylie Krahn lost their No. 3 doubles 0-6, 3-6 to Jenna Carns and Emily Nederlo.

“West Salem being like Onalaska Luther, at the top of the conference, we knew going into it it was going to be tough,” said coach Cassandra Melcher.

Coulee Conference tourney

The Blackhawks won a pair of matches in doubles play at the end-of-year Coulee Conference tournament, which was played in sweltering hot and humid conditions.

Kolden and Vance were victorious in their first-round match, in convincing fashion in No.1 doubles, by scores of 6-1, 6-2 over BRF’s Aly Emerich and Lois White-Eagle. The VHS senior duo dropped their semi-final round battle in straight sets to eventual champions Phoebe Christenson and Jenna Wahl of Luther. Kolden and Vance put up a good fight but dropped their consolation championship round match 6-1, 4-6, 8-10 to Bergen Bergdahl and Lauren Luke of Mauston.

In the No. 2 doubles competition the team of Morton and Baker dominated Gabby Kovars and Caermen Redbird of BRF, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. The VHS team was defeated in the semifinal round 0-6, 1-6 by Luther’s Abby Bother and Grace Meyer, before losing their consolation championship match 0-6, 3-6, to Sara Gomez and Ava Turner of Mauston.

West Salem’s No. 3 doubles unit of Carns and Nederlo defeated the Blackhawks’ team of Czap and Krahn in a tough battle 4-6, 4-6 and Mauston’s Klaudia Solverson and Marissa Dolada downed Czap and Krahn 0-6, 2-6 in the consolation round.

In singles play, Hoversten was defeated by Baylee Babcock of Mauston 3-6, 3-6 in round one. Mauston’s Natalie Buss downed Olivia Rottman in straight sets at No. 2. Luther’s Kaitlyn Strattman defeated Viroqua’s Rider in straight sets and Rider then dropped the consolation round match in similar fashion to West Salem’s Holt.

Avienda Inman lost her No. 4 singles first-round match 0-6, 1-6 to West Salem’s Ashley Arneson.

Inman at No. 3 singles and Krahn and Czap earned honorable mention all-conference honors.
