READSTOWN — Alice Marie DeWitt Thompson, of Readstown died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017, at the Sannes Skogdalen Nursing Home in Soldiers Grove.
Alice was born April 2, 1927, to Clifford and Bernice DeWitt in Bloomingdale, Wis. She attended Bloomingdale Grade School and graduated from Westby High School in the class of 1944. After graduation Alice worked as an aide at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua. During this time, she took flying lessons at the Sextonville Airport, where she advanced to soloing in a Piper Cub. Her children and grandchildren enjoyed hearing stories of this adventure.
On Feb. 12, 1952, she married LaVerne Thompson in Griffin, Ga. They raised their family and farmed together at Readstown, at first dairying with a herd of Jerseys and later raising purebred Hereford beef cattle, until LaVerne’s death in 1994.
Alice also worked for Schultz Brothers (the Dime Store) in Viroqua, for many years until the store closed. She then worked at Hidden Treasures in Viroqua, for a few years. She finished her work life at the Readstown Library, working well into her 80s.
Alice loved to read, especially the A to Z of Sue Grafton mysteries (through W!). She also looked forward to the annual outings to American Players Theater, that she enjoyed with her son, Dane for over 30 years. Her last walk up the hill was in 2015, at the age of 88. She loved nature, taking walks around the farm, tending her chickens, and checking cattle in the pastures, until a couple of years ago. She was regarded, at least by her sons and grandchildren, as the best baker of apple, peach, berry, pumpkin, and rhubarb pies anywhere.
Alice is survived by her sons, Dane (Jane Schmidt) Readstown, Mark (Tisha) Prairie du Sac, Wis.; grandchildren, Miranda (Eric) Thompson, Merrimac, Wis., John (Shelly Bushkofsky) Elkader, Iowa, and Chelsea Statz, Madison, Wis.; great-grandchildren, Elijah, Astrid, Merida and Veidah Thompson and Marcus Evans, Mikayla Evans and Owen Thompson; sisters, Carol Rudrud of Westby, Ann (LeRoy) Manke of Westby; brother, Douglas DeWitt of Rapids City, Ill.; and cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Lila Miller; in-laws, Arvo Miller, Blaine Rudrud, Linda DeWitt, John Thompson Jr., Buren Thompson; mother and father-in-law, Maude and John Thompson.
The family thanks the staff of Sannes Skogdalen and Vernon Memorial Hospice and Dr. Paul Bergquist for their compassionate care.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug, 21, at the Readstown Church of Christ, 120 School St., in Readstown. Friends called from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church.
