SPARTA — Joyce I. Swiggum, 71, of Sparta passed away peacefully at her home Monday, Sept. 11, 2017, with her loving family by her side.
She was born Jan. 30, 1946, to Edwin and Irene (Lee) Stendalen of Westby. She was a 1964 graduate of Westby High School. In 1966, she married Richard Swiggum of Cashton, and together they had three daughters, Cynthia, Stacey and Jennifer.
Joyce had a passion for making her family and friends look beautiful, so becoming a hairdresser was clearly the perfect path for her. Joyce worked in the beauty field in Sparta, for over 50 years; eventually becoming owner and operator of Joyce’s Curl Corner. She loved her customers with her whole heart and they became more like family to her. Their gifts of treats, flowers and hugs throughout the year were appreciated very much.
Joyce loved her work and also going to casinos and trying new places for dinner. She cherished time spent with her family. But going to the park and movies with her grandchildren were highlights in her life.
Joyce believed in people. She was always willing to give someone a second chance and taught her family to not be judgmental, show love and to always forgive. She will be missed by many but her love will be carried on.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Richard of Sparta; daughters, Stacey (Allan) Bartels and Jennifer (Travis) Thoreson; grandchildren, Amaya Swiggum, Katherine Bartels, Ivy Chrispin Willow, Sky, Eli, Ezra and Sammi Thoreson; siblings, Sharon Amundson, Wayne Stendalen, Robert (Joanne) Stendalen, and Gary (Krin) Stendalen; and brother-in-law, LaVern Dunnum. She was very close to Richard’s family, Karen and Boyd Rozell, Mary and Bill McCann, Ruth and Dan Hutchison, Wayne and Kay Swiggum, Cheryl Sochotsky, Bonnie Strittmator and Craig, Susan and Bill Hundt; many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, tons of cousins, and her countless numbers of friends.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Irene Stendalen; a daughter, Cynthia; a sister, Joanne Dunnumn; nephew, Joel Stendalen; mother and father-in-law, Chester and Irene Swiggum; sister-in-law, Carol Swiggum; and a brother-in-law, Roger Ammundson.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 15, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sparta. Pastor Mark Kvale will officiate. Burial will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta.
