A two-vehicle accident on Christmas Eve sent police, first responders and firefighters to the new Hwys. 14/61 corridor at the Old Town Road intersection.
At 12:32 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 24, a two-vehicle accident, with injuries, was reported in the city limits of Westby. The accident occurred when a van operated by Trevor Unseth, age 29 of Westby, was traveling westbound on Old Town Road when he attempted to cross Hwys. 14/61 and was struck by an automobile operated by 60- year -old Barbara Diehl, also of Westby.
Diehl was traveling southbound on Hwys. 14/61, when she struck the Unseth vehicle, which had failed to stop and yield to Diehl's southbound vehicle.
Upon impact, the driver's side air bag deployed in the Diehl vehicle, resulting in injuries. Diehl had managed to escape from her smoking vehicle before emergency personnel arrived and was transported to Vernon Memorial Healthcare in Viroqua,by Tri-State Ambulance for treatment of her injuries.
Unseth was not injured in the crash.
Assisting at the scene were members of the Westby Police Department, the Vernon County Sheriff's Department, the Westby-Christiana Fire Department and the Westby First Responders.
The accident remains under investigation by the Westby Police Department.
