A very attentive group of students attended when retired professional Green Bay Packers football player, Le Roy Butler, spoke to students at Westby Area High School about the importance of believing in themselves.

Westby Middle School January Students of the Month include: Jared Harnish, Austin Meurer, Elizabeth Nelson, Natalie Anderson, Denise Kraabel, Megan Solberg, Chase Limpert, and Ricki Parshall.

The Westby gymnastics team dominated in every event in a dual match at Tomah on Thursday, Jan. 24. Gymnasts Holly Strangstalien, Holly Mashak and Katie Sebion all placed first in one or more events.

You don’t discuss the art of lefse baking in Westby without hearing Cora Barstad’s name. Cora has no written-down procedure. “You just mix the potatoes and flour with your hands and when it feels right, you start baking.” And you don’t argue with a 95-year-old with 74 years of experience!

Snowflake Ski Club Hill Captain Dan Ellefson has a snow crew of: Ralph Melby, Corkey Steinmetz, Monte Torgerson, Sherman Erlandson, Trygve Thompson, David Bean, Richard Stakston, Mark Tainter, Jimmy Davidson and Alden Fremstad.

Westby Area High School is proud to announce Bryan Cunningham as valedictorian and Jonathan Carson as salutatorian. Both plan to attend UW-Platteville to study engineering.

Debbie Douglas, who is a student at Whitewater State University, spent the semester break at here home here.

Orrin “Chick” Anderson reclaimed his crown as Kiwanis Pool Champ. He lost it last year to Otis Holman but came on strong this year to defeat Lon Roeske in a hard fought final contest.

Daughters of Norway met at their hall last week and installed the following officers for 1943: President Agnes Syverson; Vice President Bolette Anderson; Secretary Trina Lovstad; and Treasurer Gjerda Evenson.

The War Manpower Commissioner today told the house military affairs committee that “by the end of this year 10 out of every 14 able-bodied men between 18 and 38 will be in the armed services.”

Mr. and Mrs. Martin Sather have moved into the house owned by Mrs. Even Erickson on South Main Street.

Ardys Eklov entertained seven of her little playmates on her fourth birthday anniversary last Thursday.
