Seas Branch Smithies 4-H Club elected the following new officers: Ryan Gutenberger, Treasurer; Abby Jefson, Reporter; Chelsea Daines, Secretary; Michele Gutenberger, President; Alexis Leum, Vice President; and Nikki Barker, Historian.

During the 2007-2008 winter sports season, the Westby Area High School freshman girls basketball team has been blazing hot, outscoring opponents by 40 or more points in some cases. Members of the Fab Five are Jenna Engh, Caitlin Malin, Carley Peters, Alyssa Yanske and Becca Withington.

Richard Ekern wasn’t just a bus driver in the Westby Area School District, he was a friend to all and like family to many. On Jan. 27, Ekern was honored by hundreds of people who waited in line for a chance to thank him for the positive influence he had on their children and in their own lives over the past five decades he spent driving bus.

As non-teaching members of the Westby High school faculty, Russell Holte and Jeff Jordan can be compared to guardian angels of the final product: each with a guiding hand on students all four years – and beyond.

Westby wrestlers placed well at the Coulee tournament in West Salem on Saturday: Tucker Gretebeck won heavyweight division with a pin; Scott Clark won 171 pounds with a pin; Heath Erlandson took third at 152 pounds; Ben Dowling took third at 103 pounds; and Barrett Lear took fourth at 135 pounds.

Walt Buros and Leonard Midtlien of the American Legion; Merle Holden and Herb Olson from the Lions; Pastor Gary Daines from the Kiwanis; and Owen Koch representing the Westby VFW met to plan bingo nights as fund-raisers for Westby service clubs to contribute to the improvements to Vernon Memorial Hospital.

50 Years Ago

Jean Berger, a senior at Westby High School, won the honor in her Office Practice class on Friday of being chosen Secretary of the Year.

Two local Westby Legion post members were cited at a dinner on Feb. 3for their contributions to the ost and the community. The two men honored were Dr. O. T. Nestingen and Albert Amundson. Mrs. Nestingen and Amundson’s daughter, Mrs. Clayton (Eleanor) Lee received corsages.

On Valentine’s Day, February 14, marriage licenses will be on sale in Vernon County for one-half the regular $4.50 rate – $2.50. To make the sale even more appealing, Leap Year will be observed by granting an additional 25 cents discount if the bride pays for the license.

75 Years Ago

Miss Eleanor Unseth, daughter of Mr. And Mrs. E. D. Unseth, was a bride Thursday afternoon, Feb. 4, at the Westby Coon Prairie church, her father presenting her to Lt. Raymond Hogden, of Corpus Christi, Texas.

The drawing for jurors from Westby for the spring term of circuit court includes: Joseph Bergum, Otis Holman, Reuben Hagen, Mrs. Gladys Lunde, Ben Logan, and Dagny Schee.

A group of young people enjoyed Monday evening driving sleds.

Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Lunde, Irvin and Junior, and Mr. and Mrs. Milton Leum were La Crosse shoppers on Friday.
