Westby Syttende Mai is proud to announce the 2008 Syttende Maii Saturday entertainment will be Folkendanslag, consisting of 45 traditional Norwegian Folk Dancers and musicians from three dance clubs from Gjovik, Norway.
Carmen Jean Fortun of Westby, graduated magna cum laude from Viterbo University in December. She received a bachelor’s degree in education with an early childhood minor.
During the Westby Middle School spelling bee for grades 5 to 8, Kyle Hoff placed first, Josh Urbanek, second, and Max Marchionda, third.
The Westby Middle School 7th grade Academic Quiz bowl winning team members are: Paige Peterson, Hailey Hansen, Alexis Dunnum, Taylor Schmitt, Lanie Rudie and Chelsea Daines.

For five days last week, carvers took time out to attend an acanthus carving class at Norskedalen. Students at the class were: Brian Olson, Taylor Johnson, Jeanne Dahl, Fred Jerome, Harvey Langseth, Debby Rank, Romaine Nelson, Erma Graupe and Anne Stakston.
The members of this year’s girls seventh grade basketball team are: Tara Mossholder, Amber Hanson, Sarah Olson, Jenny Jacobson, Laura Olson, Abby Barstad, Liz Veum, Katie Veum, Jennifer Stockston, Dawn Smith, Kris LeJeune, Nichole Olstad, Anne Haugen, Laura Appleman and Stephanie Haakenson.
Elnor Haugen, Coon Valley, reported that he returned to his residence at the bottom of the West Coon Valley Hill to find that his mailbox and fire number sign had been run over by what appeared to have been a snowmobile.

James R. Weber, who has been associated with Seipel Jewelry of Madison, Wisconsin for the past three years, has purchased the “Cary’s Jewelry” in Westby and took over on February 22.
The Westby High School is proud to announce that two of its senior students have received appointments to military academies. Curtis Bakkum gained appointment to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Glen Hellwig received appointment to the Air Force Academy.
Norway’s Bjorn Wirkola, presently the World Champion as well as Norwegian Champion, broke the record of the 90-meter Snowflake hill with his jump of 321 feet on his first try, then came back with a leap of 338 feet to set a North American hill record.

Auxiliary Dagney Schee of Westby has begun training at the First Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps Training Center. For the following four weeks, she will be assigned to a basic company for more detailed training preparing her to replace a man in a non-combat job.
Herbert Blaine Olson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Olson, of Westby, is a member of the latest class of aviation cadets to enroll in the Army Air Forces Pre-Flight School (pilot) at Maxwell Field, located on the outskirts of Montgomery, Alabama.
Congratulations are in order for the one kindergarten student who has had perfect attendance – Bobby Peterson. Keep it up!
