PP 2017: Gretchen Frydenlund

What is America’s gift to my generation? The number one gift, even over technology, is freedom. One freedom I have is my choice to have the job I want. And, it’s the freedom for me to express myself how I want. It could be through art, music, sports, or even this very paper. Without our veterans I wouldn’t have these two amazing freedoms that I have today.

It’s such a privilege in this country that I can become what I want. I could become a banker, a construction worker, or teacher. Heck, I could even be President if I wanted. It’s even more of an honor to be live in a country where I can make a difference. Our veterans have risked their lives so I can be what I want in the future. They already have made a difference, now it’s our turn to do the same, and if we don’t it would disrespect our freedom and disrespect our veterans.

“Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out looking for a successful personality just to duplicate it.”-Unknown. Our veterans gave us the freedom to express ourselves in any way we want, and we still try to be someone we’re not. In some countries, kids my age would think we’re crazy to have this freedom and throw it away. Many people do express themselves through sports and art, they just don’t always realize it. I think kids my age should be friends with who they want and dress how they want, NOT what everyone else wants out of them. Our veterans have given us this gift so we can be who we are not someone else.

Our veterans have given us so much. They’ve given us a free and secure future and many ways to express ourselves. America’s gift to my generation is, undoubtedly, freedom. The freedom that is provided by our veterans and our current military, serving both overseas and right here in The Land of The Free. I want to thank all of our military, past, present, and future for what they have done for our country, are doing for our country, and for what they will do for this Nation. “Only in America can someone start with nothing and achieve the American Dream. That’s the greatness of this country.”-Rafael Cruz
