The Chaseburg-Coon Valley Blues open the 2018 season on Wednesday, May 16 at “The Park” in Coon Valley, hosting the La Crosse 35er’s at 7:30 p.m.

The Blues finished the 2017 season with a 17-11 record, losing their final game 4-3 in the WBA District Tournament in Haugen.

This will be CCV’s first season without legendary coach Burt Ekern at the helm and will be a rebuilding year. Returning to the Blues lineup in 2018 will be veterans Ben Levendoski, Jeff Raasch, Corey Geary, Ben Faga, Alex Robson and Jensen Hinton. Younger players that will see action for CCV in 2018 are Alex Schulte, Jacob Horstman, Travis Hofslien, Drew Tschumper, Jake Erickson and Ryan Flock along first year players Eric Peterson, Tucker Schmitt, Austin Anderson and Hunter Desment. With a mix of veterans and young players the Blues hope to be competitive in the Mississippi Valley League playing teams from Sparta, La Crescent, La Crosse, Norwalk, Bangor, Viroqua and Mauston.

The Blues will host the Bangor Redbirds in their first MVL action at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 27. This year, for the first time, the Mississippi Valley League will be adding an All-Star game to the schedule, in what will become an annual event. The game will be played in honor of CCV Blues coach Burt Ekern, who passed away last August, and will be called the “Burt Ekern Memorial MVL All-Star Game”. Each team will nominate four players to play in the game and teams will be selected by the opposing coaches in a player draft of the 32 players nominated by their teams. The first MVL All-Star game will be played at Veterans Memorial Park in Coon Valley on Wednesday, July 11 at 7:30 p.m. All proceeds from the game will support the Mississippi Valley League.

On Sunday, May 20, CCV will host the La Crescent Cardinals at noon, and Sparta Miller at 5 p.m.
