The Chaseburg Coon Valley Blues (16-10 overall) failed to advance to the WBA State Tournament hosted by CCV at the Viroqua Park Bowl this weekend. The Blues fell, 4-3, in the first round game with Plum City at the WBA District Tournament in Haugen, on Saturday, Aug. 12.
Brock Rude took the mound and the loss for CCV, facing Tony Garner of Plum City, who recorded the win. Rude struck out nine batters, but gave six batters a free trip to first base, while Garner struck out 10 batters and walked zero.
In a game plagued with CCV errors, five total, the Blues failed to help their own cause. Plum City scored a run in the bottom of the first inning without a hit tallied. Two CCV errors, and a wild pitch put Plum City up 1-0.
CCV took the lead with a 2-run second inning. Corey Geary singled, and scored on a double to center by Jeff Raasch and Raasch scored on a throwing error by the Plum City catcher.
CCV increased their lead to 3-1 with a single run in the fourth inning. Ben Faga reached on an error and moved to third on a single to right by Geary; Ross Withington grounded into a 6-4-3 double play that allowed Faga to score, 3-1.
Plum City tied the game with a 2-run, fifth inning. They added the winning run off a pair of passed balls and a walk. Geary was 3-for-4 and Raasch was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.
CCV generated seven hits to Plum City’s three, but just could not string together enough key plays to put up runs.
The loss ended CCV’s season. Coach Burt Ekern thanked everyone for their participation in the 2017 season.
