The Norse boys and girls cross country athletes participated at the Nightfall Classic in Wisconsin Dells on Friday, Sept. 29.
Head Coach Brian Huebner said both the boys and the girls teams came through with wonderful performances. The Norse girls had 17 of its 19 runners finish with a season personal best time, with five girls improving their times by one minute or more compared to last year’s race. The Westby boys team had 17 of its19 runner post a season personal best at Wisconsin Dells.
“The Nightfall Classic course is flat and held in the dark so you would expect to get some variation in performances, but across the board we were outstanding,” Huebner said.
Runners of the week were juniors: Justice Franks (1:20 second personal best) and Kelsey Helgerson (1:30 personal best) time. On the boys side Brad Vielhuber (1:20 personal best) time performance.
“These personal best times are representative of the overall effort in the race by our whole group,” Huebner said.
The Westby girls placed four runners in the top 10 and five in the top 15 at Wisconsin Dells. The Norse top seven runners in the night race were: 5, Julianne Call 19:49; 6, Abbey Wedwick 19:54; 9, Sydney Sherry 20:12; 10, Justice Franks 20:19; 14, Elena Schmidt 20:50; 154, 27, Lexi Crume 21:34; 32, Erinn Sebion 21:50.
The top five JV girls: Valeria Nussbaumer, Ellan Johnson, Sierra Cade, Kelsie Helgerson and Abbie Larrington.
Senior Hayden Fredrickson continued his impressive season finishing second with a time of 16:08. He was followed by: 37, Kade Sherry 18:18; 47, John Lucas 18:39; 58, Derek Helgerson 18:55; 81, Kin Hamilton 19:31; 87, Roman Hebel 19:40; and 93, Evan Phillips 19:46.
The top five JV boys were Griffin Grass, Brad Vielhuber, Haakon Mathison, Kooper Lipski and Manuel Chavez.
Westby traveled to Tomah on Tuesday, Oct. 3, before taking a conditioning break prior to the conference meet at Black River Falls on Thursday, Oct. 14.
