The Westby girls and boys cross country teams are off and running with the annual alumni run and Brookwod Scrimmage already completed.

Norse Alumni Run


Everyone was a winner at the 20th annual Westby Area High School Cross Country Alumni Run held on Sunday, Aug. 13 The number of runners participating in the 2017 run was down slightly from last year with 45 participates taking to the course. The weather was warm, with overcast skies as many runners enjoyed a return visit to their alma-mater. This years race included loops of 1.5 miles and three mile distance which were not officially timed.

“Everyone had a great time,” Brian Huebner, the Westby cross country head coach said.

Brookwood Scrimmage


On Saturday, Aug. 19, the weather started out cool in the morning, but quickly turned warm by early afternoon as Westby runners focused on the task at hand for a successful day at the Brookwood scrimmage.

The Brookwood scrimmage is a two mile run held in Norwalk, on the Sparta-Elroy Bike Trail. The race is an out and back course with staggered start times as a way of creating a more competitive environment for runners. The scrimmage is not a competitive endeavor, so team results are not available, but coaches and athletes get to see firsthand their current level of fitness.

Huebner said Westby kids put forth some very impressive efforts and with a team motto , “Measure yourself, against yourself, and only yourself.” Huebner was extremely impressed with the times recorded by many of Westby’s athletes.

Runners improving their times in 2017 include: Sydney Sherry, Julianne Call, Abbey Wedwick, Liza Jackson, Erinn Sebion, Kelsie Helgerson, Kade Sherry, Brendan Buros, Roman Hebel, Brad Vielhuber, Evan Phillips, Cooper Lipski, and Griffin Grass.

Huebner said a number of new runners have joined the sport including a foreign exchange student, Valeria Nussbaumer, who is staying with Peter and Michelle Engh, and looking forward to being a part of the Westby cross country team..

“Coach Nelson and myself are both hoping for a very productive year and getting to know all the team members,” Huebner said.

Westby hosted the Westby Ken Trott Invitational on Tuesday, Aug. 22.
