The Westby girls captured the Coulee Conference team title on Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Skyline Golf Course, in Black River Falls. The Westby boys team finished fifth overall with senior Hayden Fredrickson placing second individually.

Head Coach Brian Huebner said the girls team had a very good day at the Coulee Conference meet at BRF. Huebner was hoping the girls would score at least a 40, but shined through with a couple superior performances to finish first with a strong score of 31.

Team scores: Westby 31, Viroqua 46, West Salem 75, Arcadia 108, Onalaska Luther 124, G-E-T 135.

Westby senior Abbey Wedwick led the Westby team in the Coulee Conference meet finishing third (20:55), behind Viroqua’s Jillian Weston in second (20:33.5) and Dana Feyen of G-E-T, the top individual winner (18:45.5).

Westby placed all five of its runners in the top 10. Rounding out the scores for Westby: 5th, Sydney Sherry 21:25.5; 6th, Elena Schmidt 21:30.1; 7th, Justice Franks 21:34.5; and 10th, Lexi Crume 22:01.1.

Huebner said the ground was soft, but overall the weather was ideal for the girls race with temperatures in the 50s and no precipitation or wind. He said the senior strong team had solid performances and will need to continue that moving into sectionals where the field of competition is much stronger, but having the home field advantage is a huge benefit for any team. He said junior Justice Franks also helped the team with an outstanding performance at BRF.

Fredrickson ran another solid race placing second individually with a time of 16:33. The boys race was run in less than ideal conditions with light rain that increased to steady rain by the end of the race. The individual boys champion was David Vannucchi of Onalaska Luther with a time of 16:06.

Rounding out the scores for Westby: 15th, Kade Sherry 18:41.3; 23rd, Derek Helgerson 19:15.5; 32nd, John Lucas 19:32.7; 36th, Kin Hamilton 20:03.9.

Huebner said the boys scores should have been better, but it probably would not have affected the end results in team placement.

Team scores: West Salem 69, G-E-T 74, Arcadia 75, Onalaska Luther 76, Westby 106, Viroqua 133, Black River Falls 141.

Huebner said he was proud of several of the younger runners at BRF who recorded their personal best scores of the season on a very difficult course to compete on. The personal best times improved by as much as a minute: Grace Hebel (-:15), Melody Berg (-1:14), Cooper Lipski (-32), Conor Vatland (-:31) and Manuel Chavez (-:10).

Westby is hosting the WIAA Division 2 Sectional meet on Saturday, Oct. 21. Race times are girls 11 a.m. and boys 12:30 p.m.
