Westby returned to action on Jan. 25 at Arcadia where they picked up a 48-22 win over the Raiders and traveled to Independence on Saturday, Jan. 27, where they won the tournament.
Westby, 48, Arcadia 22
The Norsemen tallied six pins and one major decision in the nine contested matches against the Raiders. Westby forfeited three matches and Arcadia forfeited five matches in the 48-22 Norsemen win.
The match began at 132 pounds with Arcadia picking up the first six points when Tyler Klar pinned Gus Klum. Trailing 6-0, Westby picked up the next 24 points winning all four matches by fall to go up 24-6.
At 138, Austin Mowery pinned Leonel Barcenas in 3:15 and at 145, Bjorn Leum pinned Lane Huebner in 3:26. At 152, Ryan Knight didn’t waste any time pinning Nic Unnasch in 42 seconds and at 160, Justin Erdman wrapped up Cesar Nunez in just 34 seconds.
Arcadia picked up a win at 170 pounds when Yahir Aguilar pinned Jack Lipski in 1:55 for a score of 24-12. At 182, Westby’s Conor Vatland picked up six team points pinning Reece Fernholz in 1:59.
Westby led 30-12, but gave back six points at 195 by forfeit, 30-18.
Both teams forfeited at 220 and 285. Arcadia picked up it last four points in the match at 106 pounds when Hector Hernandez earned an 11-2 major decision over Trevor Lemke. With the score now 30-22, Westby’s Logan Turben pinned Edwin Rojas-Perez in 1:35 at 113 pounds to inch further ahead, 36-18. Arcadia forfeited its last two matches at 120, Dallas Geier won and at 126 pounds, Mitchell McKittrick won for a final score of 48-18.
Westby grapplers and coaches were thrilled on last Saturday when the Norsemen wrestled their way to the Independence Invitational Championship title. Westby forfeited at weights 195, 225 and 285, but picked up six championships at 106, 113, 120, 145, 160 and 170.
Westby led the way with 238 team points, followed by Stanley Boyd/Owen-Withee in second with 198.50 points and Gale-Ettrick-Tremp/Mel-Min Varsity Reserves in third place with 190.50. Also participating in the tournament and listed in order of finish were; Whitehall, Shell Lake, C-F-C, Durand, Osseo-Fairchild/Augusta/Fall Creek, Royall, Independence/Gilmanton, Eau Claire North Varsity Reserve, Blair-Taylor, Arcadia Varsity Reserves and Coulee Christian.
Head Coach Rob Kirner said he was very proud of the team and with a good week of performances in the history books the team is determined to give its all at the Coulee Conference tournament being held in Westby on Saturday, Feb. 3.
Indee Invitational results for Westby:
106: Trevor Lemke (20-13) placed first and scored 29 team points. He received a bye and pinned two wrestlers before winning the championship by major decision (11-2) over Brandon Buck of Stanley Boyd/Owen-Withee.
113: Logan Turben (19-9) placed first and scored 28 team points. He received a bye and pinned two wrestlers before winning the championship by decision (5-3) over Carlos Guzman of Eau Claire North Varsity Reserve.
120: Mitchell Mckittrick (5-11) placed fourth for varsity reserve. He lost by major decision (12-4) to Dustin Bergman of Stanley Boyd/Owen-Withee.
120: Dallas Geier (16-9) placed first and scored 29 team points. He received a bye, won by pin and injury default, before winning the championship by major decision (16-9) over Dylan Mason of Gale-Ettrick-Tremp/Mel-Min Varsity Reserves.
126: Dakota Bakkestuen (18-11) placed third and scored 19.50 team points. He received a bye, won by decision, was pinned by Andrew Rothering of Cochrane-Fountain City in the semi-final. Bakkestuen then won by tech fall (18-1) over Daniel Slattery of Gale-Ettrick-Tremp/Mel-Min Varsity Reserves to finish in third place.
132: Gus Klum (8-12) placed sixth and scored 9 team points. Klum received a bye, won his second round by decision, lost by pin in round three, lost in the first match of sudden victory (11-9), and lost by decision (8-3) to Dalton McDermond of Stanley Boyd/Owen-Withee.
138: Austin Mowery (24-13) placed third and scored 19 team points. Mowery received a bye, won by fall, lost by major decision (13-1), won by major decision (11-3), and placed third with a 3-2 decision over Cody McTaggart of Shell Lake
145: Ryan Knight (27-9) placed first and scored 29 team points. Knight received a bye, won by fall (1:37), won by major decision (11-1), and was crowned champion after pinning Dresdan Lambert of Cochrane-Fountain City in 2:00.
152: Bjorn Leum (13-14) placed fifth and scored 14 team points. Leum won by fall (2:32), was pinned in the quarterfinal, won by a fall in the consolation, lost by major decision (8-0) in the next round of consolation, and finished in fifth place pinning Zane Miller of Coulee Christian (3:43).
160: Justin Erdman (16-15) placed first and scored 29 team points. Erdman received two byes, won by fall, and won by major decision (15-5) over Carter Potaczek of Stanley Boyd/Owen-Withee.
170: Conor Vatland (21-9) placed first and scored 29.50 team points. Vatland received a bye, won by tech fall (16-1), won by fall (3:25), and was crowned champion after pinning Luke Fischer of Osseo-Fairchild/Augusta/Fall Creek in 1:40.
182 Jack Lipski (4-12) scored 3 team points. Lipski received a bye, lost by fall, won by fall (4:57) in the consolation round and fell by fall in his last match of the day.
Westby will host the Coulee Conference Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 3.
