Westby hosted a rescheduled meet with West Salem on Thursday, Feb. 1. The West Salem co-op scored 137.6, to Westby’s 103.075.

West Salem senior Ellie Tschumper won two events in route to an all-around win for West Salem co-op. Tschumper won the bars (8.95) and the vault (8.6), and won the all-around with a 34.95. Teammates Sydney Hammes won the beam (8.85), and Maria Lyga won the floor (9.1). Anna Gorski (34.075) was second to Tschumper in the all-around.

Kara Timmel, the Westby Area High School gymnastics coach said the Norse knew they were in for tough competition with West Salem

“The West Salem co-op have such a talented group. It is a pleasure to watch and compete against them,” Timmel said.

Westby tried some new things in routines, which paid off with higher scores than in past meets, but the Norse also struggled in other areas.

The team honored its seniors, Savannah Kenyon and Emily Olson, as well as our foreign exchange students Isabella Zacho and Valeria Nussbaumer.

“It is tough to imagine a team without each of their unique personalities, ”Timmel said.

Timmel said Savannah has worked extremely hard on her bars routine and has achieved a fly away dismount on bars, which is a back tuck off of the high bar. She place ninth in her varsity appearance on bars.

“This is a huge accomplishment for any gymnast. We were proud to see Savannah compete on the varsity bars and show off her new skill,” Timmel said.

Junior Bekah Dwyer also had a great night on floor, earning an 8.05, placing her sixth. She took fifth on vault with a score of 7.75 and freshman Emma Nelson came in sixth on vault with a score of 7.7.

“Overall, as always, we now know the things to fine tune before our last few meets of the year,” Timmel said.

Westby traveled to Viroqua on Thursday, Feb. 8 and will host the Coulee Conference meet in Westby on Feb. 15.
